Deterministic vs Probabilistic Models

The difference between these two boils down to how they handle uncertainty and predictability.
1. The Deterministic Model: “Same In, Same Out”
A deterministic model is like a rigid mathematical formula. If you provide the same input, you are guaranteed to get the exact same output every single time. There is no room for randomness or “maybe.”
- Logic: $y = f(x)$
- Perspective: It assumes that the system is fully known and that there is only one correct answer for any given state.
- Example: A classic physics equation like $F = ma$. If you know the mass and the acceleration, the force is exactly one number. There isn’t a 10% chance the force is something else.
2. The Probabilistic Model: “The Gambler”
A probabilistic (or stochastic) model accounts for what we don’t know. Instead of predicting a single point, it predicts a probability distribution. It tells you what is likely to happen, acknowledging that multiple outcomes are possible.
- Logic: $P(y|x)$
- Perspective: It assumes there is either inherent randomness in the system or that our data is noisy/incomplete.
- Example: A weather forecast. It doesn’t say “It will rain 5.2 liters.” It says “There is an 80% chance of rain.” Even with the same atmospheric data, the outcome could vary.
